Jim Millar – Manager / Curator, Port Moody Station Museum

It is a busy summer at the Museum. Our summer students sponsored by Service Canada and Heritage Canada are working well on projects. (See the student's introductions on page 3)

Stephanie and Megan are working on displays and exhibits with Courtney's help.

Trevor has been conducting school tours (with assistance from the rest) and working on breaking our tour programs into specific grade levels that meet the Educational guidelines. Mark has been scanning photos and assisting with the Educational Program. Courtney is also verifying the artefacts on display and will be cataloguing new accessions.

The recently renovated Freightshed (now called the Large Exhibit Room) is having new displays plus will play a major part in our Honouring Veterans event on Canada Day. There is a new screen and sound system tanks to the Port Moody Foundation. The Vancouver Foundation was the biggest supporter and the BC Arts Council also helped significantly. Lots of volunteer help with the biggest thanks to Dave Maxwell.

We have a few new folks helping Tom with the garden. Things are looking good there too but can always use more support.

Canada day is shaping up. We had a successful event in 2005 and naturally we plan this one to be 'bigger and better'. Veteran Affairs Canada is the major supporter with assistance appreciated from the Consulate of the Netherlands and the Celebrate Committee of BC. We have at least 16 groups participating including the Consul Generals of France and the Netherlands with Veterans, old military vehicles and even a biplane! It will be great. If you have some spare time to help on Canada Day, we would appreciate the support as always and please encourage everyone to attend.

Membership is another important area to encourage people to become members. Important for sourcing grant monies. 2007 membership for the rest of the year is only $5. If you haven't joined, please do and try to find some friends to join as well.

I took my first 3-week vacation in ten years, travelling with my wife, Brenda to Ireland. We had a 'grand' trip driving around the Island on the 'wrong side of the road and staying at B&Bs. I will put on a slide show in September if encouraged enough – actually there are some very good pictures.

Wow... Life at the Museum is very hectic at the moment with many things happening at once... hireing and training of five new summer staff members to work on various ongoing projects throughout the Museum: assisting in the planning of events, leading tours of the Museum for school students and groups, Fathers' Day and the upcoming Canada Day Celebration in honour of Veterans.

Volunteers and staff worked long and hard in a race against time to complete final touches to the newly renovated Freight Shed, now the “Large Exhibit Room”, in time for our June 10^th A.G.M. New flooring and display cabinets, from recycled wood, have turned this area into an attractive inviting space for new displays, events, and activities. Here new displays based on specific themes will be featured. The planning of a schedule for future displays is in progress.

On the business side of Museum operations, a committee has been struck to undertake the revamping and updating of our existing Strategic and Marketing Plans. These new guidelines will be the tools to provide which direction we need to funnel energies for the best use of our existing resources.

Let's shed our Canadian modesty and step out and promote ourselves loud an clear. “We are something very special!” Let the world know we are great and worth supporting. Remember these words when you are speaking to your friends about us... every little plug counts.

In closing “Thank you” to my fellow board members, museum staff, volunteers, members, and of course our many visitors. You are all very welcome to enjoy what we have to offer – hopefully you will come back again.

• Displays in the Venosta: 12th Field Jericho garrison's medical unit - the Hong Kong Veterans' Association - the Air Force Association of Canada - the Burma Star Veterans - the Nursing Sister's Association.
• Members of the Royal Engineers Living History Society will be on hand dressed in period uniform from the 1880's and re-enact Col Moody and the engineers arriving in Port Moody

CELEBRATE FATHERS DAY AT THE PORT MOODY STATION MUSEUM

The Port Moody Station Museum is once again hosting its Annual Fathers Day Lemonade and Cookie event. This year it coincides with the Grand Opening of the Freight Shed Redevelopment Project which now houses the Museums’ Exhibition Room.

Beginning in the fall of 2006, great care was taken to insure the authenticity of the renovations. “We searched long and hard for reclaimed wood for the floors and display cases,” explains Manager/Curator Jim Millar. “This was an arduous task but necessary to keep with the ambience and look of our museum.”

An old tool display, a photographic display of Port Moody Then and Now and more are here to enjoy.

The Port Moody Station Museum is owned and operated by the Port Moody Heritage Society and is part of their effort to promote increased awareness and knowledge of Port Moody’s Heritage and History.

The Large Exhibition Hall

The Large Exhibition Hall

It has a new name and it doesn't look like this any more! We have been calling it "The Freight Shed" but with the changes made to promote the display of artifacts and allow for lectures and showings we are changing the name to "The Large Exhibition Hall".

This picture was taken earlier in the year when renovations were under way. I have had a sneak peak or two and it looks wonderful with dark rich wood and honey light wood and new displays and cabinetry. The new setup will be more flexible and there will be more flexibility for creation of changing exhibits. The museum was good before but will be even better!

Spring Blooms

Pretty Spring Flowers

The museum has a number of beds. There is the one under the greenhouse I posted a picture of in the previous entry. I recall a very nice crop of corn in there last year. There are also a number of beds in the Heritage Garden. Some of them have vegetables and some flowers.

This picture shows the museum looking past one of the two raised beds which bracket the driveway entering the museum grounds.

Of course my little ancient digital camera doesn't do justice to the pretty flowers. There are different flowers in bloom through the seasons. I know there will be many plants in bloom for Victoria Day.

Victoria Day also marks the beginning of Summer Hours at the museum. From Victoria Day (May 21) to Labour Day (September 3) the Museum is open for Summer hours:

What's Up?

What's up in the Garden? Well I can tell you the peas seem to be doing quite well. They're not in the garden but in the small greenhouse on the south side of Charlie's Shed at the Southwest corner of the museum near the Venosta. They looked to be over a foot tall already. Looking around at the Heritage Garden at the other corner of the museum grounds the onion sets and rhubarb looked to be doing excellently as well. I'll have some more pictures coming in future instalments.

The gardening at the is mostly done by volunteers and we are always looking for help with the gardening and landscaping chores! Give a call at the museum if you want to help or even if you want to learn a little I am sure someone can show you the ropes. (Or gardening twine. ;-) )

GARDENING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Join us on Saturday, May 5 at 3:00pm here at the Museum to start our season of gardening. We'll be discussing just what needs to be done, how to do it and would appreciate any ideas or suggestions you may have. Bring your gloves and gardening tools (we have some) and spend an hour or so of WEEDING, SEEDING and getting ready for the planting season. If you can't make it on Saturday and still want to help in the garden just call or email us.

Mothers Day is fast approaching and we need volunteers to help host this event. Our Mothers Day Tea on the Train is one of our most popular events and we have guests attending year after year.

We need help in set up on the Saturday (May 12) and then tea and treats on May 13 - Mothers Day anytime from Noon - 4:30pm.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Pet Parade

Easter is almost here and we are busy planning the 6th Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Pet Parade. On Sunday, April 8, 2007 from 11:00am - 1:00pm there will be lots for the kids to see and do. Our famous Easter Egg Hunt, crafts and colouring areas, pet parade, pet rescue booths and concession stand. Who knew, we still got the flu!

Apologies for the gap in regular content, but despite plenty of vitamin C, chicken soup, warm socks, mufflers, and toques - not to mention my annual flu shot - I still got the flu this year and was out of commission for a couple weeks.
We now return you to the normal programmed material! Well semi-planned in any case.

Home home with the trains....

A killdeer bird makes its nest among the tracks at the museum.
A picture of the killdeer that made it's home between the tracks in front of the museum last summer. Museum staff kept the nest from being disturbed and the hatchings given a chance to take wing.

Tooling Up

A volunteer documenting old tools.

You may not know it, but beneath the museum is a basement of treasures that include many old tools that are being catalogued and identified. They have accession numbers so that they can be tracked and found when needed for research and conservation.

A volunteer is kindly helping to identify and document some of the old tools we have.
Volunteers are an important part of the museum's operations and are always welcome.

Renovations in the Freight Shed

Just a shot of some of the renovation work going on in the freight shed. Soon it will be time for painting and we hope to have volunteers for the work night on the 24th as mentioned here earlier.

The face lift will give some flexibility in our displays allowing us to change what is being shown as well as giving an area for giving presentations, shows and classes in the freight shed.

New display cases and some permanent displays are in the plans as are a new floor and better integration of our new heat pump heating and air conditioning system.

HERITAGE WEEK - FEBRUARY 17-25

Celebrate Port Moody's Heritage! Visit local Port Moody Merchants and pick up a map of the Heritage Inventory sites in Moody Centre. Take a self guided tour at your leisure.

"104.9 clearfm" visited us for one of our Christmas Teas last year (2006) on the Venosta - seen in the background.

The Christmas Teas have become an annual Holiday Tradition here at the museum and are looked forward to by many. We are glad to have people like "104.9clearfm" drop by the museum for our events to help publicize them and join in on the fun.

Our favourite antique appraiser, Al Bowen was once again at the Museum evaluating and appraising treasures. This sold out event is a favourite among the community and we still had calls asking for tickets after the event. We are checking Mr. Bowen’s schedule for the beginning of the year and hopefully will have another Antique Appraisal.
